GdS: Correct decision made regarding retaking of Ibrahimovic’s penalty

By Oliver Fisher -

There was some controversy surrounding AC Milan’s penalty kick against Udinese and the reason why it was retaken after Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw his first effort saved.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) talks about the 42nd minute the penalty that was awarded to the Rossoneri. Bijol’s arm hit the ball that too far from his body and the referee awarded the spot kick correctly after looking at the VAR monitor.

Ibra took the penalty and saw it saved, but VAR highlighted an infringement by Beto who had entered the area first and then had cleared the ball, meaning by regulation the penalty must be retaken. Sottil protested and was sent off.

In the 55th minute Ibrahimovic went down having been held by Bijol but there was not enough for another penalty, while for Udinese’s third goal Ehizibue was not offside.
