Photo: How Milan have performed with three vs. four men at the back

By Isak Möller -

For the game against Napoli after the break, AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli is expected to revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation after a three-man backline experiment. Down below, we take a look at the difference.

Piolio decided to field a three-man backline to cope with the defensive struggles at the start of this year and while the leaking stopped, Milan took some damage in attack instead. For that exact reason, he’s now expected to switch back to the 4-2-3-1.

As you can see in the photo below, Milan have indeed done well defensively with three at the back but the 3-1 loss against Udinese highlighted that it’s perhaps not just about the formation. With the 4-2-3-1, though, the attack thrives a lot more.
