GdS: Pioli expected to change formation for Milan’s clash against Napoli

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli will go back to basics for AC Milan’s clash against Napoli after the international break. Instead of three men at the back, he’s expected to use his usual favourite formation, the 4-2-3-1.

The manager originally switched to a three-man backline to stop the leaking at the back, with Milan conceding a tremendous amount at the start of 2023. The switch has worked in that sense, but it has also hurt the Rossoneri’s attack a lot.

Therefore, for the game against Napoli, Pioli will revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation as per Gazzetta Dello Sport. Davide Calabria will get the chance from start and his task will be to stop Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, just like in the reverse fixture.

The captain did well back then but unfortunately got a yellow card at the stroke of half-time. Pioli decided to bring on Sergin Dest and the American lost a duel with the Napoli star immediately, resulting in a penalty.

Using the 4-2-3-1 formation should also help the attack a lot. Rafael Leao has been too central in the last few weeks and Milan need him out on the flank, where he can cause the most damage.

  1. hes pretty daft, isnt he?
Why cant leao go wide in 3-4-3? Does he need to be central? 2 me it makes perfect sense for leao and theo to do their thing on the left regardless of formation

    1. True, Leao’s problems have nothing to do with the formation
Anyway, Calabria against Kvara will be a disaster. Calabria was responsible for most of the goals conceeded in January. Bringing him back won’t do us any good.

      1. Yet is was Calabria who kept Kvara quiet in the last match against them. Kvara did NOTHING while Calabria was on the pitch. Only after his substitution the game changed.

    2. What trips Pioli up is not three or four at the back, or this formation or that formation. It is using a trequartista. He won’t use a 3-4-3 because he HAS to play with a trequartista, which means it will become a 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1, which are exactly the same thing we’ve been using the last 5 games and hasn’t work. This is also why he won’t use the 4-3-3, which is what I think we should be doing, because it doesn’t involve a trequartista. THIS is Pioli’s weakness. Not being able to devise a formation without the trequartista.

      1. which is sad because at fiora and lazio he did use 4-3-3
Whats the difference, he gets the boot and a new coach tries 433 or he tries 433? I dont understand if a certain way of playing (pivot) is not worknig why not try something else.

  2. No Milan has built adaptability in that 4-2-3-1 formation what Milan need is a perfect 10 somebody like Diaz or krunic has the utility to play at the back of striker.and the in that formation anybody can score in it

  3. please papa Pioli just play 433, like most big teams and give us some balance and control of midfield.
Our 2 man midfield is not working!!

Also we have so many players for the mezzala roles it would give is much more options.

    mike

    kalulu Thiaw Kjaer Theo

    Krunic/Bakayoko

    Bennacer/Adli/CDK Tonali/Pobega/vrancx

    Diaz Giroud Leao

  4. SO the big questions is: what will the CB pairing be if Calabria is playing RB? Given that it’s Pioli, I expect good old Tomori and Kalulu, not Thiaw and Kalulu, or Thiaw and Kjaer.
