CM: Portuguese midfielder gains Moncada’s approval as father confirms Milan interest

By Oliver Fisher -

Basel starlet Renato Veiga is one of the names that AC Milan have on their midfield wish list ahead of the summer, a report has confirmed.

While all the speculation continues regarding who will be the next head coach of Milan after Stefano Pioli, one of the mercato moves seems obvious regardless of who is the manager.

The absence of a true No.6 – i.e. a deeper-lying midfielder to shield the back four – has been made painfully apparent at various times this season.

Now, Calciomercato.com are reporting once again that Basel’s Renato Veiga is a name that Geoffrey Moncada has his eye on in view of the upcoming mercato.

He arrived in Switzerland from Sporting CP last summer for just under €5m and he has grown a lot. Nelson Veiga, the father and agent of the Portuguese player, spoke to Numero Diez about his son’s future.

“What I know is that Milan has been following Renato Veiga for a long time. Obviously with the opening of the window they could try to make a move, now they are still interested and observing his performances. However, there is nothing concrete yet, no official offer from Milan,” he said.

“There are various clubs from the top 5 leagues with which I have already had talks. We’ll see what will happen. There are clubs from Ligue 1, the Premier League and another Serie A club [in addition to Milan] who have been interested for a while.

“Even during the winter window there were discussions and information but, in agreement with the player, we decided to end the season in Basel and postpone everything to the summer, closing off all possibilities for the next few weeks will be important.”

Veiga has been out since the beginning of April with an ankle injury, but has made 25 appearances in total for Basel this season (22 in the league, three in the Swiss Cup), scoring two goals.

  1. Oh surprise an unknown midfielder from a subpar championship. Ambitious af. They will tell us that Barcelona wanted him I guess.

    1. Mo Salah was a Basel player once too, and a lot of other good, players you finding it hard to not complain don’t you.

      1. I agree, it doesn’t really matter where players comes from. What does matter in my view is ability, max potential and bottom level performance combined. No idea about this player but according to previous media reports its a player we have followed for several seasons so if we actually are interested in him i assume that the scouting network knows him very well.

      2. Back then when basel was actually good..nowadays the Swiss league is worth less than serie b. And sure, they probably have some talent. So does our primavera.

        So I’m not sold

          1. Really? Why? He was there for one season. People wanted him for a back up lb. Motta made him into a cb… originally he’s from roma

          2. So what if he is there? Lol. The point is Milan/Monacada interested in him when he is playing there not where he is come from, he is from Roma but never have chance to play before Basel

    2. You’re right. Everyone knows all the best players came flying out of their mams hole having already scored in a CL final.

      1. There’s an abysmal difference between recruiting no names for the midfield every summer and recruiting a UCL final scorer. It’s the strategy we used last summer and it’s been a catastrophe. We could try to find a proven player for the midfield. Last summer, Gundogan was free and reportedly interested in Milan, that’s the type of player we should look for. Raise that fcking salary cap and spend on quality.

        1. I was being facetious obviously. It’s my schtick much in the same way yours is blaming the board for every single thing this rumour mill website posts.

You can’t just bin off your salary cap. That’s not how football has ever worked. Ever. Previous owners wouldn’t have done it any more willingly than RedBird would.

Pioli has been the disaster. Pioli. He spunked the Tonali money on players to fit a system he gave up on in October. Title or no title, he can’t be forgiven for that. This board are far from perfect and they are clearly learning as they go, but their biggest mistake was trusting him. They wouldn’t, however, be the first football club board to back the wrong man.

    3. Dude , it is just a rumour . There is no official or concrete offer from ACM just ACM sending scout watching him . Every club want to get quality player as cheap as they can before they become big name . Big name = expensive . RM buy vini 40m euro in brazilian league , imagine if dortmund, leipzig,or other french club get vini first then RM would have to pay 150m euro +++ .

  2. Cant forget some “called themself fans” talking about that when we interested in Calafiori, the only positive thing they talking about him is he is Italian, and look at them now, they want Milan to signing everytime there is news about Milan want to sign a CB, really funny fans

      1. Is not about the league he plays in, is about the player. How Many players are sign from unknown league and prove to be world class.. if he is good sign him.. one thing I missed is Milan sign Brazilian players, I thing that’s where our success lays

        1. 0 players are signed from unknown league and turn out good. Z E R O

Name one. I dare you. double dare you

          1. Artem Dovbyk. Signed this year by Girona from powerful Dnipro-1. 19 goals and 5 assists in La Liga so far in his first season. Sounds like that turned out pretty good to me. In Italy, Kvaratskhelia from impressive Rubin Kazan to Napoli…Unless you consider the Russian and the Ukranian tournaments the epitome of a “known” league, naturally.

          2. Well if the unknown league are the league outside EPL,La liga,Bundesliga,Serie A,Ligue 1 then there are so many player , i can mention many name

      2. Lol he is in the radar when he is playing in Basel. The only positive they talking is he an Italian, all they bragging is he playing in relegation team Basel. I doubt they are watching him play just like you bragging now lol
