CorSera: Tonali-esque sale ‘cannot be ruled out’ this summer – the candidates

By Isak Möller -

With just four games left of the season, AC Milan are planning for the summer transfer window and a few big signings are expected. However, as a report claims, there could also be a big departure this summer.

The 2023-24 campaign is coming to an end and after crashing out of every cup tournament, Milan will part ways with Stefano Pioli. In addition to a new manager, the Rossoneri are also expected to bring in a new striker and a few signings, with Olivier Giroud confirmed for LAFC.

According to Corriere della Sera, there could also be a big movement on the exit front, similar to what we saw with Sandro Tonali last summer. The €70m gained from that sale financed the mercato and a Tonali-esque sale ‘cannot be ruled out’ even if high offers would be needed.

We are, of course, talking about Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao. All three are considered stars of the team and have price tags of around €100m, with the goalkeeper perhaps being the ‘least valuable’.

Marco Sportiello certainly showed yesterday that Milan can do well without Maignan, but Hernandez was also suspended and Leao was certainly not at his best. Point being, in the event of very high offers, the Rossoneri will evaluate selling one of them.

  1. Based on Maignan contract situation, his salary demands, injury record and form this season, Milan should definitely sell him this summer.
The problem is that since Milan management is reactive instead of proactive, Juventus already have agreement with Di Gregorio. After they snapped Motta now De Gregorio too.
Sportiello isn’t a starting caliber GK. Yeah he made a couple of saves in yesterdays dull game, but he also dropped an easy ball that would have costed Milan. Remember his 1st game in preseason when he let a weak shot go thru his hands vs RMadrid. He is a mistake prone GKer.

  2. It’s a no brainer choice. Maignan is injury prone, inconsistent and almost 30 yrs old. A goalkeeper is the easier player to replace. I don’t see any reason for Milan to give him 8-9m salary.

With the money from Maignan sale and the sale of CDK, Salaemakers, and all the other fringe players we can easily strengthen the squad with a quality DM, CF, CB, and RB.

  3. Agree with @ZionTrain and @Z – Maignan’s guaranteed to miss a third of next season after pulling a muscle while yawning – and the fact that even Sportiello’s playing better than him at the moment just about says it all.

      1. Sell Leao and get good money for it
        sell lotus the english man
        Sell Reindhar the dutch
        Sell jorvic the serb
        sell Mussah the american

        Buy 5 great new players
A great striker and another great offensive player
        and 2 strong midfielder
        plus one good difender
        Obviously conte as a coach

  4. I suggest we focus first on shot stopping abilities when we search for a new GK, when and if we sell Maignan. Modern GK my a$$, first learn to control the near post. Mike is clearly the most over valued player in our squad, and this is without considering his injury tendencies

  5. Giorgio Furlani to Sky Sport: “This year, the work will be very different. Last year, our squad wasn’t up to par, and a revolution was needed. It will be a very precise and targeted job.”

He’s not saying anything about selling, but good thing that we won’t have another wholesale recruitment next summer.

    1. Time will tell, if you sell you need to buy…

If we have 3-4 new players that are starters next season (and very possibly new coach), is that considered a revolution?

For comparison, this year we had 3 new players that were starters (RLC, Pulisic and Reijnders)

    1. Not happening. He is well under contract at Atalanta, and Atalanta are smart and ambitious. Carnesecchi might end up as Italy no. 1. He won’t leave Bergamo for less than 50m and we’re not paying that for a GK. Sorry.

  6. SELL LEAO !! First seven touches on saturday were terrible for superstar boy. PULI can play left wing (his best position),get big $$$$ for players who want to give 100 % and play some defense.

  7. i really like maignan and he is probably the best keeper while ive been an ac milan fan even if rossi always will retain a special place in my heart but paying maignan 8 mil a year while he is injury prone and shown some faltering form probably isnt in the interest of the club. Sell 60-70 mil if we cant renew on reasonable terms for both parts.

    1. Sebastiano Rossi are under rated GK , he is not like buffon, peruzzi, pagliuca but he have special place in milanisti . For me the best GK when i start watch ACM are Rossi & Dida , Maignan good GK but too bad he is too injury prone , the fair offer from management 6m euro nett or equal to leao 7m euro nett , if he still asking 8m euro nett then better find italian GK or foreign GK that familiar with serie A . Swap maignan with zirkzee ( cooperate with bayern muenchen ) are good idea too ( thats if bayern interesting buy GK for neuer replacement)

      1. Yeah he is indeed underated. Dida was great but at least for some duration of his time with us had me nervous when fielded. Nevertheless an overall great keeper. Yeah a swap deal would also be ok with me.

      2. SuperSeba set records because of the defense in front of him. His job was made easier by the likes of Maldini, Baresi, Costacurta and Panucci/Tassotti. He was a good GK, but not world class.

Anecdote: I was at San Siro in November 1999 when we beat Parma 2-1. This was after the Zaccheroni scudetto season where Abbiati had taken over as starter. For this game he was unavailable, so Rossi started. He ended up saving a penalty in front of the Curva Sud to preserve the 2-1 and the win. The place went wild.

  8. Ah yes, get rid of another quality player, that’ll help the club win…just add this decision to the many idiotic decisions this management will continue to make and when the club ends up failing because they don’t want quality players in the line up, they’ll just blame everyone else…clueless morons running this club, its sad
