De Telegraaf: Milan target Van Bommel to leave Antwerp – the reason

By Oliver Fisher -

Mark van Bommel has been heavily linked with the AC Milan job in recent days and some news has already emerged regarding his future, a report claims.

Van Bommel already has a history with Milan given he arrived during the 2010-11 season and won the Scudetto with Zlatan Ibrahimovic his team-mate, and now things could come full circle as he is a candidate to become the coach.

According to information arriving from De Telegraaf (via MilanNews), Van Bommel’s fate with Antwerp has already been confirmed: he will leave the Belgian club at the end of the season.

The former midfielder had success with them last season as he won a league and cup double, ending a title drought for Antwerp, but now he will take the next step in his still young managerial career.

It is a farewell dictated above all by the financial problems of the club and its president, Paul Gheysens. It means they will not be able to keep the former PSV and Wolfsburg boss.

Last year, in his first season in the Belgian league, Van Bommel won the Jupiler League, while this year his side qualified for the final of the cup again where they will face Union Saint-Gilloise on 9 May.

  1. My personal preferences from the viable candidates so far
    Gilardino / Thiago Motta
    Van Bommel
    Sarri / Italiano
    Paladino

I have no opinion whatsoever for Lopetegui or Fonseca so not going to say I’m pro or against the move. Probably I’d lean towards Fonseca because he knows Italian language and Serie A. Also I don’t like that Lopetegui started interviewing for Real Madrid while still a coach of Spain.

I don’t like Conte and I think the cons heavily outweigh the pros of this move. I also think that if he was successful with us, he would have zero problems dropping everything and joining a different team that offers him a better deal.

I think that coaches like De Zerbi, Gasperini and Sarri need a lot of support from management especially at the beginning, and I think our current management is more likely to hide than to support and shield the coach from attacks.
