GdS: Why Tedesco is a concrete candidate to take over at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are looking to move quickly and try identify the right head coach to take over from Stefano Pioli, with a new candidate having emerged: Domenico Tedesco.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), Gerry Cardinale has decided to change head coach in the summer and during his visit to Italy over the last few days he spoke about various profiles in meetings with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada.

In the latest discussions Tedesco’s name came up, the current coach of the Belgian national team. He will be occupied during the next European Championships starting in June, but after that he could continue his club career with Milan.

His identikit matches the profile outlined by the club: young but already a high level coach, in line with the budget and the exponent of a modern playing philosophy oriented towards young players.

In the Bundesliga he coached Schalke and RB Leipzig, with whom he won the DFB Pokal, the first title in the club’s history. He moved to Spartak Moscow and was appointed Belgium coach in February 2023.

He received a contract extension until 2026 after qualifying for the upcoming Euros, but of course an early exit cannot be ruled out. Tedesco is added to the list of candidates, which the management will further narrow down.

Cardinale will then indicate the chosen one, taking into account the reflections of the sporting area (Ibrahimovic and Moncada) and the financial one which is headed by the CEO Furlani.

The other candidates are as follows: Julen Lopetegui, Paulo Fonseca, Marcelo Gallardo and Christophe Galtier. There is no rush but the choice will not take too long either: Cardinale is in a hurry to look ahead because his last memory of Milan is sad.

  1. I swear management are now scrambling to find whatever coach is available. We’re gonna end up having a coach thats available in the market rather than a top coach. Another banter era may be imminent

    1. What top coaches are available that are not finished?
      Mou is done.
      Conte maybe.
      Klopp is burned out.
      Ancelotti, Pep won´t come.
Emery, if you even count him, extended.

People like Motta, De Zerbi are aspiring top coaches at best but not proven on the highest level.
Xavi, Zidane maybe but are home club only so far.

I do hope the baseline for the new coach is that he objectively (not emotionally) should be better than Pioli. That doesn’t need to be Klopp but also not any coach that had a half decent season.

        1. Klopp’s own words. He is taking a break because he is burnt out. Take your makeup and big red nose off before you call anyone a clown, moron.

        1. Amorim didn’t go to Liverpool so seems a bit unlikely.

Motta would make sense, also tactically he isn’t too different. Biggest problems are that he isn’t tested on the highest level and socially that he has an Inter past.

His midfield selection might also be a bit of a problem, RLC would probably fit what he wants in a CAM, but our holding mids are a different question.

    2. By ‘management’ I assume you mean ‘tabloid press’. I haven’t seen management confirm one of these targets. Relax, it’s April.

  2. The media has no more moles inside of Milan. They have no information of what is happening, so they let their imagination run wild.
Every day they come up with at least 3 new names that Milan, according to them, is considering for a new coach. In the last week they have given us at least 30 names of potential coaches.

    1. Tadesco and Naglesman were in the same coaching class together and Tadesco scored the highest and was top of the class. Tadesco didn’t get a chance at a big club like Naglesman but he is just as good if not better.

I would take Tadesco in a heartbeat. He’s also Italian and I want Milan to have an Italian coach who understands the importance of the derby and the history of Milan.

      1. I was alluding to the fact that both have long contract now wth their NT, so most likely unattainable. But what you said is interesting, thanks.

  3. So… You hire a coach who is occupied for most of the summer in the EUROS and could start in late summer? Sounds like a masterplan. There would still be like 2 weeks time to buy the players he wants and get them to play like he wants. Yeah. I smell the next year’s UCL trophy scent already. Probably a triple.
