Mike Maignan has joked about the new IFAB changes to rules regarding what goalkeepers must do before penalty kicks are taken.
After implementing the rule of having to keep your feet on the goal line, the goalkeeper will now no longer be able to move to try to distract the penalty taker, which further limits what can be done to try and stop the penalty taker.
Maignan published an ironic response to the news on his Twitter profile: “New IFAB rules for penalties in 2026: goalkeepers must have their backs turned when shooting. In the event of a save, a free kick will be called indirect.”
Nouvelles règles de l'IFAB pour les penalties en 2026:
🔄Les gardiens devront être de dos au moment du tir
❌En cas d'arrêt, coup-franc indirect https://t.co/nRpa0wi0b2

It’s getting ridiculous …the penalty kick already give disadvantage to GKs and they keep limiting their options lol
Irony or sarcasm? Sounds like sarcasm to me.
Anyways, this is a ridiculous rule.
How do they define movement? When would the goalkeeper know when he can move? How’s encroachment of the goalie work out? The ppl who are making the rules basically just made life tougher for officials and players alike. And probably introduces more controversy than anything
Not all movements, the additional forbidden movements are:
• touching goalposts/nets
• delay execution of penalties
• unfairly distract the attacker
• behaviour that fail to show respect
The touching the posts ban is ridiculous. Making the crossbar bounce… Well, that’s a whole nother story.
When are they going to clamp down on the absurd run-ups for the kickers?
