Monza director praises ‘exceptional’ Colombo: “Everyone wanted him”

By Oliver Fisher -

The Monza sporting director Michele Franco has insisted that they are happy with how Lorenzo Colombo is contributing, and he also spoke about AC Milan ahead of Sunday’s meeting.

It is perhaps no surprise that Milan seem to have struck up a certain friendship with Monza since their promotion to the top flight, given that the late Silvio Berlusconi was their owner and his right-hand man Adriano Galliani is still there.

The business began with the loaning of Colombo to the Brianza club after spending last season at Lecce, and after scoring three goals in the first half of the season he is struggling a bit for form now.

Nonetheless, the decision was taken during the winter mercato to bring Daniel Maldini back from his season-long spell at Empoli in order to send him to the U-Power Stadium, to reunite with Colombo and work under Raffaele Palladino.

Franco will be at San Siro this evening for the game against Rennes but he was present on the sidelines of the presentation of the book ‘The right observation’ by Riccardo Guffanti, and he spoke to MilanNews.

On Sunday you will host Milan…

“We are preparing well as always, taking care of all aspects. We know that playing against Milan is important. We will give our best as always.”

What can you tell us about Lorenzo Colombo?

“Everyone wanted him here because we know his value. He’s young, he has to grow and improve. He’s an exceptional boy who trains to the max every day. We’re happy with Colombo.”

Is it an advantage to face them after a European match?

“When you face a top club like Milan the advantages leave as quickly as you find them. There are great champions who can find the play at any moment. Playing on Thursday and then Sunday there is certainly also a physical aspect to take into consideration, but we don’t have to think about it. We just have to stay focused as always.”
