Motta’s agent offers update on his client’s future with Milan still interested

By Ben Dixon -

The future seems to have already been decided for Stefano Pioli, even if no message has been officially sent. All avenues seemingly go in the direction of separation, and Thiago Motta’s agent – whose client is one of AC Milan’s preference to succeed the current coach – has offered an update on his future.

Throughout the season, Pioli has overcome several threats to his job and has been stronger each time. However, when given the setback of the first loss to AS Roma in the Europa League, he and his squad did not respond appropriately, leaving his future hanging in the balance.

With this in mind, it now seems a case of When will the call be made to move forward on separate paths, which restarts the cycle of managerial links to the club. A report earlier suggested that the Rossoneri could look to Antonio Conte to succeed Pioli.

However, the Diavolo could try a late swoop for Thiago Motta, who has reportedly been in advanced talks with Juventus recently. Today, his agent, Dario Canovi, spoke to TMW (via Milan News 24) about his client’s future.

Will Allegri move away from Juventus?

“It seems to me that the hints are there that he may change. There are too many rumours saying this and usually in football when rumours are repeated they are quite true. But if Juventus win the Coppa Italia and go on to the Champions League it will be difficult to change that.”

A quality of Thiago Motta?

“A quality of Thiago Motta? Convincing his players that his ideas are the right ones.”

  1. One major disagreement.

Pioli never got stronger after he saved his job. He always reverts back to his mediocre ways.

  2. At the rate things are going I would lean strongly towards a more experienced coach to resurrect Milan. Its now a toss up between Conte and Sarri. Although i would prefer Sarri.

      1. Two coaches with outdated mentalities and styles of play. It’s either thiago motta/De Zerbi or a whole lot of suffering for us fans, that’s why even though I’ve wanted pioli out I’m not going to celebrate too early

  3. If Daniel De Rossi can change the fortunes of AS Roma in a twinkle of an eye then in three months of preseason Thiago Motta would change the fortunes of AC Milan and place them on vertical trajectory I believe. De Rossi is the assurance that Motta would actually perform wonderfully well at AC Milan.

  4. many people have said it many times. Pioli is an ok coach. But he has reached his ceiling; and that’s ok. We will all be eternally grateful for picking up the team during those really dark days and giving us some consistency, a scudetto and UCL regularity. But this is it, we need new ideas to move us forward.

  5. Facts should be taken into consideration:

    – 11 new players, all from foreign leagues.
    – new formation (really unecessary)
    – considering points above, he still holds us in 2nd place domestically.

    Concerning observation:

    – fail to implement an actual system of play
    – fail to adapt
    – players seem unmotivated and confused
    – team is fragile mentally and seem to regress futher each game

I too think his time is up here. He agreed to total revamp and got players he wanted (at least based on characteristics). And he failed to impose a system he had in mind. We need fresh ideas and energy.

A new coach would likely demand players suitable to his ideas so we could be in for another revamp. Motta plays 4231 so maybe just a puzzle here and there but with Conte we’re talking about total revamp once again. Or if he sticks with 343. That is feasible with this bunch, just few improvements needed.

Hoping for actual targeted improvements from market this summer. Including a coach.

    1. I think Motta adapted 4231 because it was the right thing for the players he has. Not necessarily something he’d use at Milan. He does use 4141 or 433 sometimes

    2. Agree. One thought, I understand coaches “liking” a system and asking for players to suit the system but it makes me appreciate more coaches like Carletto, who adapt tactics to whatever players he’s got. He did it at Milan, at Chelsea and now at Madrid. We complain about Pioli’s inability to adapt, but what does it say about someone like Conte whose system aparently is set in stone on his formation and cant change? .It’s a simplistic view, i think all coaches can adapt; but it bothers me. I mean, i prefer beer, that does not mean i cant or wont drink wine and have a good time. Why cant a conte change his tactics to suit players (and have a good time) ?
I also realized most coaches are like that, i can only think of carletto, perhaps zidane or Alonso who adapt and still perform. a
