Tuttosport: Milan eye Valencia star and Georgia hero as post-Maignan option

By Isak Möller -

A new name has emerged in AC Milan’s Plan B pursuit of a goalkeeper, as the renewal talks with Mike Maignan are proving to be rather difficult. Giorgi Mamardashvili, who recently sent Georgia to the Euros, is the new name in question.

Maignan’s contract will expire in 2026 and Milan have begun talks over a renewal, wanting to avoid another Gigio Donnarumma outcome. As per the latest reports, the goalkeeper’s initial requests are rather high and that’s why the Rossoneri are also planning for the worst-case scenario.

According to Tuttosport, as cited by MilanNews, the latest name on Milan’s goalkeeper radar is Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili who recently helped send Georgia to the Euros. In the shoot-out against Greece, he made a great save and dove the right way on the other missed penalty.

In addition to Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio, Mamardashvili is one of the options for the post-Maignan era. In the event of a sale, Milan know that they could get around €80m for the Frenchman and around €40m would then be needed to sign the Georgian.

The Rossoneri have a good relationship with Valencia after the signing of Yunus Musah, and seeing as the Spanish side could use the money, the price tag could probably be lowered a bit. The priority remains to renew Maignan at the figures of Rafael Leao, though.

  1. One of my choice when playing football manager, cheap release clause and high potential.

That being said I think he also showed to be decent in real life too, so if we really move for him I’ll support him.

I still prefer someone Italian though, as we also have some talented GK out there… but the price could be the problem.

  2. “Milan know that they could get around 80 mil for the Frenchman”.
    Yeah, OK.
He’s got 2 year left on his contract coming off his worst season. If you add his injury record, you’d be happy if you get the same money inter got for Onana.
Inter sold Onana coming off his best season and got 50-60 mil.
There is no team out there that desperately need to spend 80 mil on a GK, especially not Bayern.

  3. I suggested this last summer, but 40M I think is more than we want to spend on a GK, given our other needs. But I guess IF Mike leaves and IF he brings in 80M there would be 40M available to sign Mamardashvili. But that’s a lot of ifs. If Mike leaves I would still prioritize Di Gregorio. Italian, knows Serie A, and will help satisfy the UEFA homegrown player rule.
