Tuttosport: Conte crossed off – the names that stand out on Milan’s list

By Oliver Fisher -

Even though there are five games left in the Serie A season, a lot of the speculation surrounding AC Milan at the moment is related to how things might look going into the new campaign.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes this morning, the decision has been made to part ways with Stefano Pioli once the season ends after the losses against Roma in the Europa League and Inter in the Derby della Madonnina.

Out of gratitude and respect for what he has done in his five and a half years at the club, Pioli will be left in his place until the end of the season and allowed to continue fighting for second place in peace.

Gerry Cardinale will have an active part in the search for his successor and will have the last word on the final decision, and there are a lot of names to sort through.

From the next few days onwards the objective of the management will be to try to whittle down the options as much as possible. In this sense, one of the most considered candidates remains Julen Lopetegui : there have been contacts but the feeling is not everyone is convinced.

Other profiles that tease are those of Sergio Conceiçao of Porto, even if their president suggested he would stay if he were re-elected, while the former Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel – now at Antwerp – must be mentioned. RB Leipzig’s Marco Rose is on the list too.

However, Antonio Conte’s name is not there despite the fact he is one of the most invoked and dreamed of by sections of the Rossoneri fan base. He just simply does not match up to what the ownership want.

    1. Well… Milan’s roster isn’t THAT bad. We won PSG. That shows what the players are capable of. We just need that kind of performances week in week out. Pioli couldn’t do that. Lots of other coaches can.

We don’t need a revolution. We only need a new, stellar #9 and a possibly a DM. Even that is a questionmark as it depends on the new coach. If and when the next coach can make Milan players play/defend/attack as a team then the DM isn’t necessarily even needed. But one thing is certain. We need to replace Giroud with a bulletproof goal scorer. We cannot afford to take a risk and fail there. Do or die. All other positions/players might be good enough already in the hands of a proper coach.

      1. The team isn’t bad at all. Just need the right coach to elevate these players further.

Leao, Theo, Bennacer, etc all players that were relatively on the downlow until Pioli elevated them to new heights. Currently he’s lot the plot, but it’s time for another coach to step in and make Leao next level. Make THeo next level, etc.

    1. Yes, that’s good too. It would be a shame if next season Milan repeats their mistakes and can’t even compete. There will undoubtedly be many star players leaving.

The point is that Milan needs fresh funds!

  1. AC Milan give priority for save best players like maguin ,Leo ,Teo,Pulisic &others then Xavi is best for me but Porto Coach also best

  2. Conte doesn’t fit and goes against the long term view.

Motta would be a logical continuation and he has the season to back it off.

Van Bommel would be good personality-wise, coaching wise he not great, not horrible.

Rose maybe, but no cultural link at all and questionable adaptation to Serie A tactically, goes for all german school pressing coaches kinda.

Pioli shouldn’t be ruled out completely if he finishes with 80 points or higher. That is still a form that can win you a scudetto in the right season, no reason to change for a third choice option just for change´s sake if there are no prime options available.

  3. I don’t like Conte’s behavior so Milan get rid of his name from coaching list . Xavi is my 1st Choice ,sergio (porto coach ) is 2nd Choice ,Emre(Aston Villa coach ) is 3rd choice

  4. Conceicao would be best, his playing style suit our guys and as a Portuguese maybe he can get more out of Leao as well.

    1. Not saying he is the worst option but he is already mentally fatigued and had one really great season. If we would be FC Barcelona sure, but as AC Milan …

  5. I don’t understand why we are hesitating on Motta. Look at what he has been able to do with a lesser team and less quality players… CL Qualification, went to Roma and comprehensively beat them after we failed…. TWICE.

“Verbal” agreement with Juve doesn’t mean sh!t. Step in and hijack the deal. THere’s nothing in stone. Thuram had a “verbal” agreement with us and look how that played out.

Motta literally checks every box for what Milan is trying to do… Criminal allowing him to go to Juve.

    1. You’re onto smth here mister
He definitely showed some great spirit and tactics against us especially in the second match which in my opinion was pretty impressive
He seems like a great option
But in all honesty everything other then Sarri and the couch of Brighton would be pretty good

    1. Sarri is a system coach. His system only works if all players buy into it. If they don’t it all falls apart, like it did at Lazio.

His system COULD work at Milan, but ATP Milan want European football played at Milan which rules out many Italian tacticians.
