MN: Giroud breaks drought and has personal record firmly in sight

By Oliver Fisher -

Olivier Giroud got back on the scoresheet during yesterday’s victory against Lecce at San Siro, and in the process he got his 15th goal of the season.

As MilanNews write, Giroud now has 15 goals to his name for the season which means he has surpassed the tally from his first season at the club across all competitions.

The Frenchman – who thus celebrates his 90th appearance in Serie A in the best possible way – updated a tally which now reads 47 goals in 123 games (100 of which as a starter).

The No.9 broke a month-long drought. In fact, he hadn’t scored since March 7 against Slavia Praha, in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League.

Limiting it to the league alone, Giroud had gone five consecutive games without a goal, with the last one being in the unfortunate away match in Monza.

His last goal in Serie A at San Siro was in January, in the 3-1 win against Roma which marked José Mourinho’s farewell to the Giallorossi bench.

Next target: the 18 goals scored last season, a number obtained after 47 games played. In this final rush the former Arsenal and Chelsea man has the chance to equal and beat that record, before potentially saying goodbye.
